Herpes simplex virus, commonly known as herpes, is a common infection that can cause painful blisters or sores. It is spread primarily through skin-to-skin contact. Herpes simplex can be treated, but not cured.
There are two types of herpes simplex virus.
Type 1 is spread primarily through oral contact and causes infections in or around the mouth (oral herpes or cold sores). It can also cause genital herpes. Most adults are infected with herpes simplex virus type 1.
Type 2 is spread through sexual contact and causes genital herpes.
Most people experience no symptoms or only mild symptoms; the infection can cause painful blisters or ulcers that may come back over time. Medications can reduce symptoms but cannot cure the infection.
The recurring symptoms of oral and genital herpes can be distressing. Genital herpes can also cause stigma and affect sexual relationships. However, over time, most people with both types of herpes adapt to living with the disease.
